Pago del Mare Nostrum

High-altitude wines, untamable essence

At the foothills of Sierra Nevada Natural Park, where the altitude exceeds 1,500 meters and the landscape turns wild, Pago del Mare Nostrum is born—the most extreme project of Pago del Vicario. This estate challenges the limits of conventional viticulture, offering a unique experience both for the vine and for those who uncork its wines.

The estate combines nature and cultivation: 25 hectares of fruit trees (almonds, cherries, walnuts) and 28 hectares of forest populated by pines create a biodiversity-rich environment that enriches the character of the vineyard. The soil, with a loam-clay texture, is covered by purple phyllite stone (launa), which imparts a unique minerality to the grapes. These are poor, basic, sparsely fertile soils and, precisely because of this, perfect for producing intense, complex wines with a marked personality.

A climate that shapes character

Extreme altitude and proximity to Sierra Nevada define a rigorous climate: mild summers (with nights at 15ºC and midday temperatures up to 30ºC) and cold winters, with lows reaching -6ºC and frequent snowfalls. In cold years, the white blanket can remain for more than two months. This unique climate allows slow and steady ripening of the grapes, promoting the development of complex aromas, good acidity, and great balance.

verage harvests are around 5,000 kilos per hectare in vineyards with an average age of 15 years, ensuring limited production and constant care. Every harvest is an exercise in patience, observation, and adaptation.

A challenging viticulture

Growing at altitude is not just a technical decision — it’s a statement of principles. At Mare Nostrum, we commit to wines that speak of the place, the effort, and the time. Each sip tells the story of a harsh, beautiful, and wild landscape.

Pago del Mare Nostrum represents the boldest version of our winery: wines born from effort, raised at altitude, with the minerality of the soil in their structure and the freshness of the mountain in their soul.
